Butterflies in the Library

Butterflies in the Library

This past month we watched the life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly as our friends went from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. I set up a display table with the butterfly garden kit we got from Insect Lore along with books about caterpillars and butterflies and a coloring sheets we got from Oriental Trading on the Life Cycle of a Butterfly. I learned so much! Much more than I did when we did this in school. I just hope the kids enjoyed watching them grow as much as the staff did. We had over 100 people stop by and pick up a coloring sheet and ask questions and one group even made a special field trip one day to see the chrysalises. Everyone keeps asking me what we’ll do next. You’ll have to wait and see.

I also held a special Butterfly Storytime just before the release of the butterflies. Since you don’t know exactly when they’ll be done going  through their life cycle and weather permitting, it’s hard to plan this in advance but we used our social media sites to announce the date and time as soon as we knew. Sadly, channel 25 news showed up 2 minutes after our release and missed the whole thing, but no one told me they were coming. Maybe next time.
